newbie domain setup help

We have a windows 2000 server (say test1)with 20 CAL's, also runs DHCP server.

Also we are planning to buy a new windows 2003 server (say test2) pretty shortly as a backup if test1 goes down. I understand that in w2k there is no PDC/BDC concept, all are peer domain controllers.
- Do I need to buy 20 CAL for server 2003 also?
- How easy is to sync the AD from test1 to test2
- When my main server Test1 is down is it easy for me to switch all users to use test2 as the PDC

This is not the way to do this. If you setup a W2K domain you will have to update the domain to run W2K3. Setup the W2K3 domain and join the other DC to it.

my main w2k server is handling important applications and I dont want to disturb that..
So I decided to have a backup w2003 server as one more domain controller and install all applications and if my main goes down I can ak users to use the new server..

So then it is not possible to have w2k DC and w2003 DC in same netowrk..is it?

Just reading around, but what is a CAL? Is it some sort of Client Allocation List? I don't know much about this stuff, just curious really.

I think the cal for W2K3 is different, you'll need to buy CAL if you install the app into it.

That's why I don't want to install it now because we only have 4 lic to upgrade to w2k3.
