I am a newbie to upgrading my own system. Someone was helping me and left me stranded midway. As a result I am stuck with a new uninstalled motherboard (MB VIA PT880 ASROCK P4V88) and my system is a gateway performance 1600PC with 128mb rdram pc800 memory, intel pent. 4. I know that the memory is not compatible and that is the one thing I definitely wanted to upgrade.

Would Rosewill 1G(2X512mb) 184 pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) model# RW400/1024kitdp $71.50 be compatible with the ASROCK motherboard?

Processor - Intel Pent 4 640 Prescott 800 MHz FSB 2MB L2 cache LGA 775 em64t model#BX80547PG3200F be compatible with memory and motherboard?

What else do I need to consider?

I am really a newbie so any help would be useful.

Heres the page where you can get info on your motherboard.
You are right on the ram as it says:
Supports DDR400 and Dual Channel Technology
So the other rdram pc800 is no good for this board.

Big problem
The CPU you have chosen is the current socket 775 where as this board is the old socket 478pin.

You would be better off buying the newer socket type.

groths,

Welcome to the world of "Build Your Own".

First off, look for your motherboard manual, many of the items you will need to know are contained there. If you can not locate it you can down load a PDF manual form ASROCK at this link:
ASROCK P4V88
Intel Pent 4 640 Prescott 800 MHz FSB 2MB L2 cache LGA 775
As this is a Socket 775 and your motherboard lists support for Socket 478 Intel processors this will not be compatible. You will need to obtain a CPU of the socket 478 variety. BTW the number refers to the volume of pins on the CPU or socket for the CPU.

The board also lists support for DDR 400 memory so in general you memory choice will be gender compatible. But I would check their site for recommended memory suppliers as if you look around this site you will find several posts on one suppliers memory not functioning while another does. As this is your initiation, try to check compatibility before purchasing and avoid headaches.

I am not familiar with Gateway, but several mfg's use special connectors, Power supplies and the like. As a basic case can be obtained in the $50US range, I would not try to cut a corner here. Get a ATX standard case & either use your gateway as a 2nd system or sell it. I would also start planning for the purchase of a "Quality" Power Supply, if not now very soon. A case might come with a PSU but they are usually not of the quality variety. A failure in this area can take out many items of your system and render them useless.

Hope this Helps You to proceed in a successful manner.

Wow. Thanks for all of the advice. I will study this and might have to ask for more help later. My friend said this was a great site and she was right. Thanks again.
