Newbie: C/C++ Compiler issue

What I would do if I were you is get the Gcc port of thier c++ compiler, called DJGPP. Look at the FAQ in this section. Not only is it very good, it's free! It will not do visual stuff easily, but if you're new and learining, it's a good start! Good Luck!

I'll second that recommendation, djgpp is excellent.
Borland also offers a free compiler (just a command-line based interface). You might also look into cygwin.
