Hi everyone,
Forgive my ignorance on the matter, but I am in a new environment with a cisco pix firewall and need a little clarification on a few things. Basically, I need to go into my pix firewall and open up a few ports for vpn support. My question, though, is at the most basic level - how do I go about adding lines of code to my configuration, like opening these ports, without overwriting the existing configuration? Is it possible to do this through telnet? Any suggestions on commands to use and best practices would be appreciated.

telnet to the firewall.

enter your password.

enter "enable" and it's password
enter "configure terminal"

make you changes. :) You should have a much better understanding before making any changes. The book that comes w/ this firewall should help you out.

I am currently learning the PIX firewall myself...I must recommend the book I am currently reading to you. It is "Cisco Security Specialist’s Guide to PIX Firewall" from Syngress Publishing You may find it at a better price from amazon.com. Hope this helps you out.

Cheers
