I am a recent BA Computer Science graduate that has been working in programming for several years. I would like to get into the hardware/server side of my IS department and thought that the A+ certification would be a good start. The only problem is that I know very little about hardware. I just purchased Mike Meyers Passport A+ book and ordered his All in One book. How long on average should it take me to soak up all this where I can take the exam? Are there any other books I should get that would be better? I would like to take the exam before Christmas, is this realistic?

Thanks!!

it seems to be alot of just memorizing what thing are called(not that simple, but thingamajig won't fly). if you just got out of college it should be pretty easy for you(i'm guessing your young)..i'm 44 and a maint mechanic, this stuff is just a hobby for me.my memmory ain't what it use to be.i'm also reading mike meyers a+ passport,i'll probly have to read it twice before i go take the test.i've build a couple dozen computers and repaired more than that.i read on the net to learn, now i have to remember the specifics which the book is pretty good with that info.realy it's not hard to build them, for the cert it seems to be ALL MEMMORY
hope this helps to put your mind at ease
good luck

Hi,

As the co-author of the A+ Certification Passport I wanted to give you a reply. My best advice to you, is to read and study, and do some practice tests. It's really hard to say when someone will be ready to write the exam - I've known people who were ready after only 4 weeks of intensive learning, and others who took six months or longer.

If possible you should try to pick up some old computers from a yard sale or flea market so that you can get some hands on experience.

And if you need any help at all, or if you have any questions at all about the Passport book, let me know.
