If I want to clone my server using the mksysb backup what must I do? When I run the mksysb job on the weekends I use the '/usr/bin/mksysb '-i' /dev/rmt0 ' command. I had heard that I may need the mksysb to backup ALL drivers instead of the ones that are currently loaded? We are about to use our Mksysb tapes to test a D/R on a bare metal machine and I wanted to make sure that the tapes are usable on a new machine.

If your bare metal restore is on the exact same hardware then all you need is the mksysb tape. When restoring to different hardware, boot to a AIX CD at the same level as the mksysb and then recover the mksysb from tape

There is an easier way to restore on a different hardware.

You just have to set your mksysb as generic. All drivers will be included in and you won't have to use the aix cd

The correct way to say it is realy: a generic backup based on a Mksysb

But, using this way to clone your aix boxes you cant use tapes to make your backup. Only CDs or DVDs can do it.

A generic backup is based on an mksysb file and all hardware drivers included on the same bootable media.

What is the command string to run the 'generic' mksysb? I need my weekly mksysb backup to be able to restore to a new server....not the same server...in case of a catastrophe...like a fire for instance. How do you guys run your mksysb?

To go a generic BACKUP note that's not a generic MKSYSB as i said previously.


First you have to create an mksysb file and the get that file to create a generic and bootable CD.

To burn the disc you set your mksysb file paht and the path to find the #1 AIX cdrom to get all the filesets needed to support all hardwares types.

Then with mkcd or direcly via smitty (smitty mkcd) using system backup menus you can create your generic disc.
