When I attempt to run the newaliases command I get the following errors.

warning: cannot lock /etc/aliases: Error 0
hash map "Alias0": unsafe map file /etc/aliases.db: Permission denied
WARNING: cannot open alias database /etc/aliases
Cannot create database for alias file /etc/aliases

I've checked for lock files in all the places I can think of and stopped all processes that I think could possibly be locking it, with no success.

I'm running sendmail 8.9.3 on RedHat Linux 6.2.

Any help would be massively appreciated!

Cheers

Are you running "newaliases" as root? As the sendmail "aliases" file has been open to abuse in the past, I think you need to log in as root to run "newaliases".

If you are logged in as root, then what are the permissions on the file "/etc/aliases.db"?
