My pc has been running good until just today. Now the mouse freezes for about 3 seconds, more or less, about every 5 minutes. Anyone have any clues?

The only thing I changed was the task scheduler. May I went the wrong way in the settings. Can someone help with this TOO?

All help is appreciated.

Could be a hacker / trojan .
Mouse/keyboard freeze is on that symptoms list.

Download and run ad-aware and spybot .
Remove everything found .
Remember to update their definitions before running.

Thanks SYAR2003. I ran adaware and found two items and deleted them but that did not stop the mouse hangs.

About every minute or so it hangs. Sometimes even if I move from one icon to another (seconds) it will hang.

I have 512MB of ram. Are there some good settings I can put in to make the pc run better and not freeze?

I have VM set at 1536/3072. I cannot find my notes on manually coding for a Max/Min value in the config.sys (?) file. I think it used to be added under Vcache. Its been awhile since I have done it so am not sure. Especially now I am using xpp.

Again thanks for your help. Kudos on the last one.

1. Service Pack 1 installed? If not, intall it.
2. USB mouse on USB port?
If Service Pack 1 is installed, apply the patch: 3. USB mouse connected with adapter to PS/2 Port?
This will never work right under XP.
4. General Mouse issues:
. Find the specific driver from the mouse manufacturer and install it.
. Increase the mouse sampling rate in the hardware settings of the driver.
. If cordless, try new batteries.

SP 1 installed.
Mouse is a Logitech Optical mouse. Device mgr lists it as a MS PS/2. What do I do now? Still install the patch above?

XP does not handle PS/2 connections all that well, in part as many do not support in hardware exactly all the features required of such ports.

1. Install the logitech mouse drivers after downloading a fresh set from Logitech. These get changed frequently. Do not use the generic MS XP mouse drivers.

2. If the mouse is really a USB mouse, use a USB port and throw out the PS/2 adapter/converter.

3. Make sure you have enabled PS/2 legacy support in your BIOS if such a BIOS feature exists.

4. In any case, update your USB drivers for XP from the patch I listed above, to help future USB devices you may install.

Ok, here's my update. downloaded and installed update for Logitech Optical mouse. Patch 822603 also installed. It seems to be working ok now. I will have to watch for awhile and see. I did not get BIOS update yet. One thing at a time for me.

I am going to check the settings in device mgr/control panel and see what's there.

Good luck to others with the same problems.

Report back.

I have a little file on logitech mouse problems, as somehow they cause in certain settings a lot of grief.

Hope things are resolved for you permanently.

Bill

So far it seems to be working ok. I changed nothing in mouse settings just to give the update a bit of time to cure the problem.

If anything changes I'll try to remember to add what happens/ed.

Thanks to you all. Kudos.

I have same problem... downloaded the USB patch fix from MS as per above... It didnt help. I will try the Logitech drivers again (I uninstalled them and tried to manually find any reminants thinking that this was all caused by some driver conflict). But MS drivers used to work fine but now they do not. I'm leaving now to try once again. Here follows a copy of my other reply in a like thread if you haven't read it:
I have a Logitech mx500 and same thing happens... changing usb ports helps for a while but resumes within a short time. I use the same mouse pad and mouse as the #1 gamer in the world so that for sure is NOT it. Worked fine for months and then Whammie! Hundreds are having same problem. One guy found spyware/worm and it cleared up... Another found changing color of pad fixed it. With others these solutions (and others didnt help... others have reinstalled from scratch and it's still there! If I use USB, mouse will hang for a sec or two and then resume (with "device connection lost" chime and then the other chime when it is found again)... sometimes it hangs forever and then I have to unplug and replug. Sometimes it happens every 30 secs, sometimes it gets as bad as every few seconds. If I try to use my PS/2 adapter instead of hanging it does the opposite... it goes BERSERKY TURKEY... I mean it is all over the place, auto right-clicking everything and unleashing all sorts of resulting madness. Then it returns to normal. Same thing happens in games or on desktop (hangs if USB or berzerks if PS/2. I have tried another brand new non-optical mouse (well part optical... it's the Razer Boomslang) and the same thing happens. I am about ready to tear my hair out."

Been there did it all. MS intellimouse explorer connected to a Dell 1703FP flat panel whic in turn is connected to a Asus P4b533

All MS patches installed, latest mouse drivers, latest bios. Problem does not occue if mouse is connected to PC, only when connected to the 1703 FP. I may go does wihtout seeing it and then other times (like tonight) I can't move the mouse 1 inch without it dropping out and back online.

Dell refuses to help as the monitor was bought by itself (not as part of a system.)
