Listening to the radio this morning on the way in, an american chap said "causation" and "step wise fashion"
Where have these phrases come from?

step wise fashion in IMHO sounds really, really bad
I may not know correct English, but I know what I like

and how long has columnist been pronounced colum-nist?

As far as "columnist" goes, Yourdictionary.com shows the only pronunciation as "colum-nist". (

"Causation" has long been a word, related to "causality". But there is a sector of American English-speakers, mostly in academia, where bizzare constructs of modifications of nouns to verbs and vice versa are de rigueur.

"Stepwise fashion" might have been better-expressed as "incremental". But then, the talking head you were hearing is probably in that academic circle I mentioned earlier.

Actually there is a free lunch, and a free dinner, and free drinks. Just ask a lot of the women I tried to pick up or dated over the years. :)

Jake,

Shortly after I joined TT I Googled TANSTAAFL to find out what the heck it meant. Got a surprisingly quick answer, too.

And I haven't had nearly enough coffee to take a stab at SMAKIBBFB. Something about a Free Breakfast?
