When I open a new IE6 window it always comes up with a partial page, not maximized....this is nothing more than an annoyance which I would like to fix....

Thanx....

I am as fond as the next guy to registry hacks, but this is not one of them.

Open IE, create a situation in which a second window opens in a smaller size.

. Do not touch the maximize icon at top right.
. Close the primary Window.
. Use your mouse to stretch the top, bottom, left and right sides to fill the screen.
. Exit IE by the steps: File, Close

Done.

If the problem every re-appears, repeat these steps for sub-Windows #1, #2, #3, etc.

I looked at those two resigtry keys myself and wondered what hex values they should be for "maximize".

Actually, I don't believe the site those were copied from spec'd the hexidecimal (if I'm on target).
Rather, deleting those keys and then rebooting is a way to make Windows recalculate the size, position of IE windows that have been skewed.

The key that I changed was actually this one

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Full Screen

The data I changed was set at 'no', I changed it to 'yes' and it worked immediately, I didn't even have to reboot!!

That's one I used to know and forgot. Thanks for the reminder!

carr,
I can see removing with regedit a bad entry. Is my advice above not going to over-ride that registry entry?

Curious. I do usually do a Ctrl-X to exit, but the File, Close IE should server the same.

If not, I need to revise my thinking on this common problem. Advice?

Bill

Nope. I think we're in agreement.
I got my neck hairs raised earlier today in the 9x forum when a poster recommended regedit over msconfig and third-party apps to shut down startup items. Their whole post was a little extreme, in my opinion, and ended with - I quote - "A good tech is never afraid of going into the Windows Registry.
I wanted to respond with something like..."But a great tech knows when it's not appropriate." Just because you CAN, doesn't mean...
Anyway...back on topic.
It's not a bad entry we're dealing with, hence I agree.
I was actually quite surprised to see this registry edit applied to a problem that I solve 9.9 times out of ten with the fix you stated above.

If you can avoid the registry, do so.
This is one case where using regular Windows tools will work.

The only trick(s) are to avoid hitting the Maximize button at to right, drag the windows borders to what you want, and tell IE affirmatively that you want to save these settings with the File, Close option; or holding down the left Ctrl-key while clicking on the X to close at top right.

Do it once, and it should hold until a javascript messes with the settings again.

I am fairly experienced with the Windows NT registry, but for this instance I would use the steps above.

My opinion and my best,

... and thanks carr, for a second vote that my thinking was that this should work unless the situation was truely unusual.

If it does not, kill the registry values (not the keys)mentioned earlier. Windows will rebuild the entries.

Apologies for the incomplete post above.
I agree that the registry should be the last port of call, I didnt know of another weay to fix it. I had though that the problem was the IE was opening off the screen.
