We just got two new Dell 2850 servers with Windows 2003 R2 Standard. I installed the servers, patched them up and installed the required application server and File server components.

The problem is that the two new servers will NOT talk to each other, but the other servers and workstations can. I cannot ping new server 1 from new server 2 and visa versa with either the IP or name, but from other servers and workstations I can.

This is just weird. Any ideas?

Thanks!
Mike

I've installed 2 new R2 servers already for 2 new clients and there are bugs/issues etc... Did you install the 64 version or just the standard? My cd pack came with both versions.

Are either of these a domain controller? how are they configured? Are the firewalls enabled and running on the server? I always shut the built in firewall off and disable it on all systems.

Had some weird problems with policy propogation, printers push outs etc, problems that didn't exist with the 2003 standard edition. Some, not all, of the workstations took forever to do the first domain logon. Just sat there "creating domain list". Forced a reboot and then they logged on just fine. Just some weird little issues.

Remember that 2003 server R1 was "secure by default", from microsofts standpoint. R2 is even worse. The fact that they are sitting on a dell probably isn't helping matters.

If you get stuck at the "creating domain list", hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and that should stop that.

I'd check the firewall settings on those, as they are on by default.

I've got probably a dozen R2 servers on Dell hardware and haven't had a problem yet.

Thanks for the input folks... This is really weird, but it seems that the blade on the switch was failing, causing little goofy problems like this. I've never, ever seen any switch failure manifest itself like this.

I cannot ping the server and I cannot ping out .. it was working fine ?
Help

I too have Dell servers with R2 Std., and am having problems with software installs. Two apps will not install, though they will on 2003--Ghost 7.5 and VirtualDrive 9.0. Does anyone know why this would happen? Do I need to assign roles for these to install? Any help would be appreciated.

I know on our new XP workstations that have SP2 installed, we have to go into the XP firewall and enable "allow incoming packets" in order to ping them.
