Hi everyone

I have XP Pro SP2 and keep the Windows Updates current. I did an Update today and have noticed now that, if I click a web address on a page in IE6, it hangs and the new page doesn't open. If I copy and paste the address into the address bar of a new instance of IE6, the web site is reached correctly so I know that the site isn't down.

Any idea why this odd behaviour within IE6? I've not done anything (tweaks, installations etc.) other than the Updates mentioned above. My AV is kept up to date and Spybot, HiJackThis & AdAware scans reveal nothing of concern.

Thanks in advance.

IE 6.0 on XP Pro WON'T LOAD UNLESS I PRESS F5

Hi

Thanks for the input.

The problem isn't that IE6 won't load but a new window won't open when aqn address is clicked. For instance, I received a notification of a response in this thread into a hotmail account which I accessed via IE6. The web address <javascript:eek:l(' was given and I clicked it (optimistically!). IE6 paused, as if it was looking for the page, but another instance of IE6 didn't open and I was left with my original Hotmail Inbox page. The "stall" lasted about 30 seconds.

I copied and pasted the address into the address bar of a new instance of IE6 and deleted the leading and trainling "rubbish" (<javascript:eek:l('> and <');>) and, sure enough, it lead me right here!

Anyone know why IE6 isn't going to the required page? I normally like it to open a new instance so the referring page is still available to me easily.

Thanks for any further ideas.

Hi again

I've just downloaded and installed from and tried running IEFIX, as suggested. I have popups disabled - but always have had. I tried allowing them and it makes no difference. Needless to say, I've tried rebooting my PC and router between each of the above tweaks.

Finally, and I don't know if it's relevant, I can't use the Search facility from the Start button. When I click "Search", the cursor turns to an hourglass for about 60 seconds and then reverts to the arrow.

This is SO frustrating!!!

Any more suggestions???

Thanks in anticipation.

I've been looking on other boards and found a solution that works (for the time being, at least!!!)

I went to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced. I unchecked <Enable third-party browser extensions> and restarted. I DIDN'T check this myself and no-one has had access to my laptop. My AV and other Malware is always up to date so don't know how the checkbox was filled. Could it have just "happened"?

Anyway, that's my solution, if anyone else has problems. Of course, I suspect that it could recur, in which case I'll be back!

That checkbox is selected by default because there some very good browser extensions with legitimate uses. You appear to have one that is either maleware/spyware or possibly just plain broken that is messing things up. You can test most of them by disabling one at a time - go into Internet Options, Programs tab, Manage Add-Ons button.

Thank you - that's interesting. I read something about disabling req.dll, which I have done. I restarted IE6 and the Google & MSN Toolbars weren't there. I reinstalled the Google Toolbar and, during the installation, it said that I needed to have req.dll activated, so I let it do so. The toolbars were restored but req.dll is still listed as disabled when I went to Tools>Internet Options>Programs>Manage Add-ons. There are .dll files related specifically to these toolbars so I guess that's why they're there.

From your post, I suspect that I can enable req.dll and disable *everything* else before enabling each one in turn (presumably stopping and restarting IE6 after each tweak but would I have to reboot after each tweak??) to see if the problem recurs and to find which is the offending Add-on?

Finally, I suspect that disabling and re-enabling these in turn won't cause any problems? I'm not deleting them, after all.

Thanks again for additional help.

The file req.dll is from a virus, likely Trojan-Downloader.Win32.ConHook.c or a variant thereof. The easiest way to remove req.dll is to change the permissions on the file so that nobody has permission to do anything with file except for deletes. Then reboot the computer, and when it comes back up delete the file. There may also be another file on your computer, c:\1.exe, that is capable of reinstalling the virus. It should be deleted as well.

Thank you. That's interesting.

About a week ago, my McAfee did it's usual weekly DAT upgrade and immediately identified req.dll as being infected. It dealt with it by itself. I've checked the IE6 Add-ons and req.dll is still noted as being disabled but, when I've searched for req.dll from Start>Search, it couldn't be found. Any idea where it's likely to be? Could it be hidden? Should I modify the search criteria?

I looked for c:\1.exe and, as soon as I opened the c:\ directory in Windows Explorer, McAfee identiied this as malware and deleted it.

I'm a little concerned that McAfee let this through. I keep it fully updated but realise that none of the AV programs are absolutely 100% sure to capture everything. I know it's not practicable to have several AVs running simultaneously. I suppose I'll just have to hope there's nothing else lurking (I'm about to run a full system scan) and that no harm was done by this malware.

I *do* practice safe hex and it just shows that nothing is 100% effective - except not connecting to the internet!!!

I just wanted to say the IEFIX download worked... On my banking website the links weren't opening.. I was going insane, uninstalled Jave, reinstalled. This didn't work. uninstalled IE and reinstalled, THAT didn't work. Finally I downloaded Opera just to get the stuff done and all the links worked.. But I didn't want to give up on Internet Explorer window. But Anyway I just wanted to say thanks for posting the fix it worked for me:)
