We recently linked a remote office to our main office via a VPN. Performance accessing data over the link is a little slow as expected, but that is not my concern. There is a major slow down just accessing files on each PC's own hard drives at this remote office. This office was previously a peer-peer network via workgroup config. When we implemented the VPN we decided to have them log onto the domain at the main office.

These are W2K workstations with a NT4 PDC. The VPN does slow down the initial login- that's not a major issue. What we are seeing is that some actions that just access the local hard drive are taking way too long. Example, if you access My Computer and then access the local C drive, it takes maybe ten seconds to populate all of the folders and files on the root C drive. If you unplug the network cable it is almost instant to access this.

Does anyone have any ideas of what is causing this problem along with some things to try and fix them?

I just wanted to add that we are using a Fortinet hardware based firewall/VPN.
