I just "inherited" a Windows 2003 server running Exchange 2003, and am still trying to learn how it is (mis)configured. There seem to be two major problems.

1, When users are added to the Domain, they show up in a Users list, but not in the Global Contacts list.

2. The Global Contact list cannot be used for internal e-mail.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

exchange DS discover any GC server?

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking, but this is a one-server location.

Calendering works fine, just no local e-mail, and no new users on Global Contact list.

Hi, what benlu is trying to say is that, is there any Global Catalog servers online. You can check this by using this

How to Remove the Global Catalog from the Original Global Catalog Server
To remove the global catalog from the original domain controller: 1. On the domain controller from which you want to remove the global catalog, start the Active Directory Sites and Services snap-in. To start the snap-in, click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Active Directory Sites and Services.
2. In the console tree, double-click Sites, and then double-click sitename.
3. Double-click Servers, click your domain controller, right-click NTDS Settings, and then click Properties.
4. On the General tab, click to check the Global catalog check box

NOTE: Allow sufficient time for the account and the schema information to replicate to the new global catalog server before you remove the global catalog from the original domain controller.

I got those instructions from this site

I know it says Windows 2000 and you have 2003, but at least you can check your server to see if its a Global Catalog with the above.

Thanks!
I'll give this a try as soon as I get on-site next.

Should have mentioned - Contact sharing (delegation) etc. works fine for those in the Global Contact list.

Hi All,,

When you first create a new user object it will not show up in the GAL straight away, until the Recepient Update Service updates. or you can manually force the update via system manager.

Also look to see if there is a no internet mail policy in place and make sure that mailboxes have been created for these new users. When you created a new user from a Server that is not an Exchange or a does not have exchange tools installed you will not get the prompt to create a mailbox. Just a few simple things to check first.

Thanks for your response.
New users do have mailboxes.
It's been two days, and the GAL still hasn't populated.
Others can see new users Calendars, but not share their calendars with new users.
External e-mail is handled by Outlook via an ISP POP server. Internal mail doesn't exist.
I'm going back to this site on Monday, and have some more ideas about things to look at, but there seem to be several "small" things awry at this location.
The more I learn about this installation, the more confused I get.

Just learned that delegate rights are amok too. Some (not all) delegates can perform more actions than they have been given rights to perform (like add & delete).

Is their outlook running in cached mode. If so the problem could be your the offline address book. Try rebuilding it and then do a send and receive of the offline address book on the client.
