New User needs a hand

I am trying to rename a file with the current month.
ex. supplies.xls
rename to suppliesxxx.xls (where xxx is the current month abbreviation. jan, feb. etc)

Am I in over my head?
I can rename the file normally, but can't figure out how to input the month string.
