First of all, hello to all. I have purchased some Cisco equipments before I found this forum. I have since read some of the posts here regarding the CCNA lab. Sure enough, the equipments I got was not on those list lol. I just want to know if what I got are sufficient for my CCNA and/or CCNP practice.

Cisco Catalyst 5509 with
Supervisor IIIG w/ 2 GBIC (runs CatOS)
Supervisor III w/ 10/100 (runs CatOS)
3 port GBIC blade
9 port GBIC blade
(2) ws-x5302 RSM routing module (runs IOS)
(2) 24port 10/100
AC Power supply

Spare 5509 chassis with
Supervisor III
Supervisor II
2 RSM
24 port 10/100
AC Power supply

Cisco 7505 Router
RSP4
(2) VIP cards
4 port Ethernet adapter
4 port enhanced serial WAN adapter
ATM line card
Packet over Sonnet card
AC power
(2) spare RSP4

2 Cisco 3620 routers
(1) NM-WMDA Wireless Module
No faceplate, no network module.

2 Cisco 1720 routers, no power supply
1 56k WIC Card

Those are what I got. I was suggested by my instructor to also get the 2620XM and the 3500 switch. By the way, what is the difference between the 2620XM and the 2621XM, because there is a big difference in the price. Should I just sell these off and buy a new lab? By they way, I paid $400 dollars (was it a rip off?)

Kin,

Welcome to this forum!!!

You said -"By the way, what is the difference between the 2620XM and the 2621XM, because there is a big difference in the price." The difference is 1 Fast Ethernet port - 2621XM has 2, 2620XM has 1 - other then that they are exactly the same!!!

As for what you have -I know the 3620s - just bought 1 - they will do SDM so they will be a help for CCNA - you will need to get at least 1 Ethernet Network module and a serial WIC for each - check Ebay or Cables and kits has some good prices on these.

Will help if you have the max 64 DRAM and 32FLASH so you can run 12.3 IOS and SDM.

Do not know the 5509 switches - but you need the IOS that runs on the 2950s or 2960s.

Same with the 7505 routers - sounds like you have Ethernet and serial interfaces - might work. Start with Google and learn what it can do and what IOS it will support - the more "Cisco" you learn the better!

I did find a great deal on eBay - guy is selling 2650s with 128 Dram and 32 FLASH - has rack ears, power cord, console and all covers for $80 - this will run IOS 12.4, for $80 I think it is a deal. You do want to get into a 2600XM or a 3620/3640 so you can do SDM - since you have 2 3620s you might want to see what DRAM and FLASH you have.

Here is a link for lots of docs on the 3600 router -

Hope this helps!

1720s - search them on Google and look for the power bricks - I would not spend to much on these.

Hello Kin,
I agree with CiscoGuy... I don't think that you got ripped off... The 3620's and the 1720's will prove a nice addition to your Cisco lab... Will talk about the routers in a second.. the switches are slightly more difficult here..

First.. (as you said) the switch that you bought runs CatOS as opposed to CatIOS.. IOS is newer and has a different syntax.. This may prove a burden as the books and online material (current) will no doubt reference IOS commands... That said you will need two switches for playing with VLAN's and a minimum of three for STP.. I suggest that you keep a lookout for the Catalyst 2924XL switches... You can find some great deals on these sometimes.. eBay... The 2950 is the next step up... Everything that I have read states that the standard edition 2950 is more than sufficient for your CCNA/CCNP needs... Be careful in the 3500 range... If you (eventually) buy one of these then you want the 3550 as it supports Layer 3 and PoE!!! KEEP YOUR SWITCH AND PLAY WITH IT!!! You will learn so much from doing just that! You can add it in the mix later on... You will see!!!

Now on to routers... Like CiscoG said.. the 3620's are awesome.. 12.3 and SDM support (Which I did not know that you could run with 12.3.. Thanks CiscoG).. The 1720's can prove useful as well.. Let's start there...

1720:

Most useful cards: Check eBay.. These all work in the 3620's as well with an NM-2W or anything that has additional WIC slots.. IE. NM-1E2W or NM-1E1R2W (they fit inside of these)
WIC-1T
WIC-2T
WIC-2A/S
WIC-1DSU-T1
There is also a VPN module for 1720's and 1750's...

A good setup for cards for your lab as it is would be:
1x NM-4T or NM-4A/S (3620 number 1)
1x NM-1E2W or NM-1E1R2W (3620 number 2)
1x WIC-1T (3620 number 2 in NM Card)
2x WIC-1T (Both 1720's)
Plus DTE to DCE back to back serial cables...

All of these routers support Frame Relay and PPP.. Can use one of the 3620's (whichever has the 4 async ports) as your frame relay "switch"..

Normally I would say that you overspent a little but the inclusion of the NM-WMDA cards changes that fact... If those cards work you made off like a bandit... I am sure that you will find a use for them as you progress.. or I will give you a hundred bucks for the two of them.. LoL

Start with the NM's and WIC's then worry about switches later... You need those cards to get your lab going and the real switching don't come until the CCNP anyway.. By the time you get there the price of the switches may have decreased somewhat... (In the least you will eventually run across a steal)! I bought four 2924XL's w/ Enterprise for $36 and a 2950 24 port for $70ish.. LoL Just play the waiting game with the switches and get your cards...

Hope this helps!

I think the Route Switch Module (WS-X5302) on the 5509 runs IOS. But the guy said the Supervisors run CatOS.

Thank you CiscoGuy, Maczen, and Burt for your inputs.

Maczen, you said "Normally I would say that you overspent a little but the inclusion of the NM-WMDA cards changes that fact... If those cards work you made off like a bandit... I am sure that you will find a use for them as you progress.. or I will give you a hundred bucks for the two of them.. LoL
", the guy did tell me if I don't use that wireless card, I can sell it and make my $400 back lol.

Yes you can.. No problem.. But I would hang on to them.. They will help you out in the CCNP when you get to wireless!!! I would say that you have yourself a nice lab there! Congrats!

Stupid question, what is the difference between the regular 2600 series and the 2600XM series routers?

GottaBeKiN,

You said - " what is the difference between the regular 2600 series and the 2600XM series routers?"

Other than price :);-) ALL of the 2600XMs are Fast Ethernet including the 2610XM and 2611XM. They are faster then the non XM 2600s of the same number, here is a good chart showing Router Switching Performance in Packets Per Second (PPS) of all the Cisco routers from 800s through 3640s -

This will give you the difference between most Cisco routers that we talk about in this forum.

Here is another chart from Cisco showing differences between many of the routers -

And last is a 6 page PDF showing the amounts of memory that almost EVERY Cisco router has, you can see differences there -

I hope this helps!

Also, the XM's are designed to hold more DRAM and flash than a 2600 non-XM---I had to get one to hold my advanced enterprise IOS. The most you can have on a 2600 is like 64MB DRAM and 16MB flash, but an XM will hold 128MB DRAM and 64MB flash.

Thanks for the links CiscoG!! You know how I love links... LoL

maczen,

I do not think I saw on your list - you NEED to check that place out , not only do they have forums for just about every ISP but they have a General Networking, Security, IPv6, Cisco -(some very deep discussions there) and many, many more - PLUS the Cisco FAQ has lots of config examples and that is where I got the 3 links above.

I stop at Tek Tips first and then DSL reports 2nd - this is my fav :) but DSL has lots that you will like!

Check it out!

Hey Burt, I saw a posting on ebay for some 2650 non-XM routers. They have 128/32 Memory, is that an exception? By the way, I was looking at the cisco website and they said the 2600XM series is EOS in April 2008. Does that mean the prices of the used ones will come down soon? Burt you get a star too lol.

Thanks!
The 2650's I forgot about. The EOL means that they will no longer be eligible for SmartNet support, so the price may come down on them...

Burt

GottaBeKiN,

If those are the 2650s for $80 each I bought 2 from him - great packing and they have everything - rack ears, cord, covers, front bezzel etc.

I put IOS 12.4 on them - like 29 mgs - they work great!! Very happy with them and $80 for a 2600 router that does Fast Ethernet! Way Cool :)
