My new Vista Home Premium desktop has something called mediaserver running, this has loads of open connections (I can see in the firewall).
To be honest this computers main function will not be downloading media.
But can I safely remove media server or is it part of the OS.
If It is safe to remove how is that done?
I don't see anything obvious in the installed programs list.

Update: after completing the Media center setup I found an option to turn off Mediaserver, which has stopped most of this, there is still an open port 445 which seems to be some sort of M$ media gathering thing

445 = microsoft direct host/microsoft directory services

There's a Intel Viiv icon on the taskbar.

First time I clicked it tells me to complete the Media Centre setup...
When this was done, double click Viiv Icon
Then then Viiv Screen has a
Button [Options] click this then Click [Media Server Options] then Click [Turn Off media Server].

I see from yuor link that Port445 is used by the event log, as this computer is a Gateway with 'Bigfix' running (I havnt removed it as yet) then I suspect its something to do with that.

I ran the shields up test and it says that my computer is very secure and all the port access attempts failed.

To be honest as its only been on a handful of websites, has COMODO newley installed and is connected to the internet via a NAT Router and COMODO has 'allow access from the network' turned off. Then thats what I would expect [smile], nice to see it though.

That is good news for you. Be aware that if you are behind a Router that itself is firewalled then your test at ShielsUp!! was probably testing any Router Firewall and not Comodo.

If you like you can post a "HiJack This" log for other to look at for any other malware problems.

I have Vista home premium and wanted to know if there was an actual tutorial loaded with it, I've heard it was but what I see is an extensive help file. Is that the tutorial I keep hearing about cause Welcome to Vista doesnt' give much information. Thanks, Thom

tchiphead2,

If you type the word "Tutorial" in the Help program's Search Box it brings up this message with lots of links.

"Windows Vista demos

These narrated video demonstrations are designed to introduce you to personal computing and the Windows Vista? operating system. Watch as tasks are performed on screen and concepts are explained through animation.

In addition, new demos are published on the web on a regular basis. Visit Windows Online Help to see the complete collection of Windows Vista demos".

I have never come across the old Tour.exe in Vista and suspect it may no longer exist.

Welcome to the Forum, next time you should post in your own thread rather than sticking your question on the end of an unrelated thread. It will make it easier for you and for people to answer your specific question.
