New to the IT World

Hi guys,

Well let me give you some background on myself. I work for SHI, we are a reseller of hardware/software. I currently hold an assistant manager position in sales. Not Happy!... I've been doing this thing for almost 5 years. I was offered a config position here and declined about a year ago. Now I find myself back in it.

My first step is get A+ certified. In reading on the web and on the forum I see that it's going to be a challenge. So, I wanted to pick everyone's brain on what direction I should go in terms of preparing for this exam? So many books and schools to choose from. I thought it would be best to do it on my own.

I have a basic knowledge of hardware/software...nothing to brag about for sure. If you have any insight that you can share with me that would be great.

I'm a fan of Mike Meyers's A+ All-In-One, but this has received some criticism from some folks here.

When I took the A+ exams last summer, the questions were in two formats: multiple choice and point-and-click. I found that reading this one book was enough for me to pass both exams the first time around.

While this approach may not work for you, it's certainly one way to do it...

Any book that Mike Myers hsa authered also exam cram a+ study guide is good. The last ones out areISBN 0-07-223119-x for hardware. ThenISBN 0-07-223124-6 for O/S also there is one for managing and troubleshooting PC's ISBN 0-07-223146-7 all are published by Mc Graw Hill publishing.

I hope this is a start to bigger and better things. I have always been interested in computers and enjoy troubleshooting on the software side. This industry is so wide open with all the different certifications and specialties...that's exciting and challenging.

There are many sources you can use for the exam. One of the things I do is get emails from

that have different questions that is sent to you everyday. They might not be as hard as the original test questions but it will give you a start.
