I have recently installed SMS on to a server within an exisiting domain (the server is not a DC).

I know little to nothing about the use of this product, but I figured half the fun of learning is in the initial installation (yeah right !!!!)

Anyway, I now have this bad boy all loaded up and appearing a though it is functioning. I have been able to pull client information our AD, but for some reason i cannot get my test client to appear within a collection. As a matter of fact, the only system appearing in the collection is the server itself.

Presently my test client has the software installed on it, but based upon having read other posts, I don't believe the services on the client are active.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there a "Systems Management" icon in control panel on the client?

On the server side the first thing I'd check is that you have the site boundaries defined corectly (Site Hierarchy, right click on Site Name and then Properties), either using IP Address range or Active Directory Site Name (from AD sites and services).

Then check that the account you specified to install the SMS client has admin privilage on the client (go to Client Installation Methods, client push installation and then the accounts tab)

Then depending on the discovery method you are going to use check that at least one is enabled and has the correct settings in there....

I verified the two ideas you've given me and they are configured appropriately.

Interestingly enough I was reading another post on this site and started fooling around with the toolkit tool MP troubleshooter.

When I run the Pre-installation tests with the server as the MP candidate I have one issue being detected-- "BITS server is not Enabled on test1"

When I go into my system services and look at BITS though it shows it as running. Now the service itself does not say that it is a server service, but that is my assumption as I have always had BITS disabled before.

In IIS under Web Service Extensions have you checked that BITS Server Extensions are allowed, I know I had to manually make the change when I set up my site

Well to solve some of my own problem, I'm going to admit to being stupid. Apparently I missed the fact that there is a web extension in IIS that is for BITS.

whoops I'm a bit slow on my response --Yeah I hadn't installed the extesion for some reason.

Kelly, Where did you enable to BITS in your IIS, the Default Site?

Tony

I was being foolish. First I realized that I hadn't installed the bits component when installing IIS because it is not one of the default items that installs.

Then I:

right clicked on my computer
selected manage
selected services and applications
selected Internet INformation Services
Double clicked into Web Service Extensions and allowed the BITS Server Extensions.

The SMS 2003 Toolkit has been very helpful in troubleshooting my ignorance, but i've had a somewhat difficult time identifying how to resolve some issues I've come across.

Thankfully my collections are now populated from my AD server, but I still have one item that isn't working yet and I'm not sure how to resolve it.

That issue is Testing MPCERT HTTP request Functionality Failed The server is not operational

Even though this message is coming up I'm still able to collect info on my systems, remote into them, push out the client install, but I'm not sure if it will impact either reporting or pushing out updates.

Hi Kelly. Were you ever able to fix the "Testing MPCERT HTTP request Functionality Failed" problem fixed? What did it end up to be that was causing the problem?
