Here's a great site with all sorts of HOW-TOs on SharePoint:
One of their tutorials you may be interested in is on how to create themes. Their graphics are interactive - if you click on a certain part, it tells you which part of the themes file needs to be changed and which attributes are associated with it.
Very helpful site in the end!
