I’m new to routing but have a reasonable idea on networking. I have a WRT54G (IP 192.168.1.1) DSL Modem (192.168.0.1).
The WRT54G is connected to my PC via NIC (IP 192.168.1.42 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Gateway 192.168.1.1 (WRT) DNS set to ISP info)
I get connection, then I don’t. I want to use static IP’s as I connect to an Xbox as a media centre and I set the shortcuts through the NIC’s static IP.
My question is with all items having static IP’s do I turn off DCHP on the modem AND router? Is this what is causing the erratic behaviour? Or is thee something else wrong with my set-up?

Any help would be very much appreciated

Mark

So you set your machine to a static IP of: "via NIC (IP 192.168.1.42 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Gateway 192.168.1.1 (WRT) DNS set to ISP info)."

. to start with, whether DHCP is enabled on the router does not matter. If you use non-conflicting (default) address ranges below 192.168.1.99 or above 192.168.1.100 you are fine in terms of static IPs.

. Your issue is disconnection on large transfers (video streams).

While I am an reasoned fan of some third-party firmware, perhaps you should use the official BETA version of the WRT54G firmware that addresses specificly issues with large file transfer failures:
While I do not know all the details of your connection, a firmware upgrade from the details you provided seems wise.

Best to you,

Thank you for the reply,

I think i found the problem, I had DHCP set on both modem & Router/gateway. Checked all the settings and ensured the modem worked direct to the spare NIC. So all seems fine.

Thanks again for the advice

I have the system up and running now, but after a while the internet connection is lost, and re-connects, but i cannot join any web pages, the bit-torrent downloads continue, also i cannot connect to the modem thro' 192.168.0.1. but i can get to the router at 192.168.1.1.
This has lost me.

Thanks in advance for your help

One thing I have found is that if I diable the NIC connection then enable it again the internet and web browsing works ok again, and i can connect to the modem.

Any ideas??

For Bit Torrent, see my firmware suggestion above.

Got it sorted, the DNS on the moden DHCP wasn't set right. I set it to the same IP as the modem and i have not had a spot of trouble.

Hope this helps others.

Thank you for your help!!
