I have Red Hat 8.0 installed and it comes with the server and client for MySQL 3.23.54a. I am following the MySQL manual to get the thing started so I run "/usr/bin/mysql_install_db" and everything appears to run fine. Then, I follow it's instructions to give the user a password via "/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password password" and I get this:

"Can't connect to local MySQL Server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' '(111)'"

There is a little bit more to the error but I think that if anyone can help me out, I've already given them an idea. Please help. Thanks in advance, Jeremy
