Hello!
I know very little about the Merlin Magix. I'm looking to install one in one of my offices. How the heck do you configure this?

-I know the main cabinet comes with the Processor and then 5 slots, correct?

-I need to add a T1, so would I use module/card 100DCD? Or is there something else?

-I need to add 25 phones (4412/4424) so would I use the 024 module or the 016 MLX module? I guess I would need 2 of them, correct?

-I need to add analog lines and faxes, so would that be the 008 OPT card?

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

A good place to start is downloading the manuals from the Avaya website. Alot of the Legend manuals do apply to the Magix, esp. the System Planning R6.1 since the concepts and system logic are nearly identical.

The 008OPT is an analogue T/R station module for Off-Premises-Stations or on-prem ones that exceed the copper loop length of the 012T/R or 016T/R modules.

The MLX modules only support MLX phones, ie: MLX-5 -5D, -10, -10D/DP, -16DP, -20L, and -28D.

Happy reading!

You REALLY have a lot of reading to do. Why do you need a T1? How many lines are you going to have?

In any case a T1 will give you up to 23 lines (the DCD module is just a glorified T1 with a built-in CSU/DSU). You can also use an INA or DS1 module for T1 or PRi service.

As for your 4412/4424 (4400 series) phones, you will need either a 412TDL (which gives you 4 analog telco lines with caller ID capability and up to 8 4400 series phones) and/or an 024TDL which allows you to connect up to 24 4400 series phones. You will also need an amphenol connector going to a 12 or 24-port patch panel to connect the phones to either of those modules.

The 016 MLX will allow you to add up to 16 Legend MLX series digital telephones - which are a lot cheaper than the 4400 Magix series phones.

Hooking up T1 service is not for a novice - so you may want to hire a local installer.

If you want to add analog single-line telephones/devices - like cheap phones, FAX machines, modems - you will need an 016 T/R module - which allows you to add up to 16 such devices. However, if you plan to have a dedicated fax line - I would leave it out of the phone system alltogether and just run it straight to the fax.

Do I have a total of 5 open slots plus the Processor, or does the Processor take up one slot in that first cabinet?

Besides the processor, you have room for 5 more modules. So, if you go with T1 service:

One slot for a T1 module,
Two slots for an 0124 TDL and either another 024 or 412 TDL
One slot for an 016 T/R module

That leave you one more slot for either a voice mail module or something else.

Got it! Thank you Tom!

**Processor**
Slot 1: T1 100DCD Card
Slot 2: 016 T/R Card(for analog phones or faxes)
Slot 3: 412 Card (4 CO lines/12 phones)
Slot 4: 024 Card (for 24 phones)
Slot 5: Voicemail

Does that sound right?

I like my line cards up front and the analog and voicemail in back - some like the reverse.

I would do:
1. 412 TDL
2. 100DCD
3. 024 TDL
4. 016 T/R
5. Voice Mail
