Hello,

I am in the market for a firewall and was interested in the watchguard firewall product until i was told it would cost around 6000 pounds.

Somebody at work was saying that we could just use an old computer with two nics and install and configure linux as a firewall. We have a 2mb broadband link.

Is this true and if so has anybody here done it. I would appreciate some advice.

Cheers,

Mick

Or Smoothwall or fwbuilder (my fave).

Note, they're all based on IPTables, it's just the ease of use, features and eye-candy that differentiate them.

Use m0n0wall. Goto (by the way those are zero's in "m0n0" not O's). This is a linux based firewall that runs on FreeBSD and is written completely in PHP. The best thing about this firewall is that you control everything right over a web gui and you never have to touch any scripts, in fact there is not access to any scripts. You create all the firwall rules, nat, interface, ipsec, pptp, logs, everything right off the web interface. In the past I have used IpCop, Smoothwall, Jays firewall, and many other linux based firewalls and this by far has been the best and most easy to use. I have been running at the company where i work for about 1 year now and its been flawless. Let me know if this helps you out.

Good Luck!
