I am new to adobe illustrator, i am designing a A5 double sided leaflet. My Question is to design a double-sided leaflet do i have to design two pages(files) or if i can design on both sides of the page(artboard).

...if using CS4, create two artboards A5...

...if using CS3 or below, create two separate A5 documents, or else use Indesign or quark instead...

...from a prepress point of view, it is bad practice to be creating double sided artwork on the same spread as this just creates more work needed further down the workflow with having to split digital files apart...

...if it is a folded leaflet (4 pages) then you can create a readers spread on the same artboard...

...if it is a multiple page bound project, don't use illustrator, use quark or indesign using facing pages or single page modes...

..to clarify this point again:

"...if it is a folded leaflet (4 pages) then you can create a readers spread on the same artboard..."

...that would mean two artboards (CS4) or two documents (CS3 or below), with pages side by side, back cover left, front cover right and the two inside pages as a readers spread...

Thank You apepp for your help.

I have created my leaflet in illustrator with your help.

I have some printing problems as well.

Its a A5 Leaflet but when i am trying to print it out, in the preview box it does not fit it goes out of the margins unless i choose 'Fit to page'option.

In the 'Page size' i am selecting A5.

And one more thing how do i print on both sides of the page in illustrator.

I am doing this work for someone its my first job and i want to give proffesional work to him.I have to do this in Illustrator on his demand.

Thank You

...what size is the physical sheet you are actually printing onto?

...and the actual document size (file > document setup), in mm?

...is your printer duplex printing capable?

...if it is a proof print to show client, then printing both sides might not be required, depends on what paper and printer combination you have...

Doument Setup is A5.(height:148mm, width:210mm)

I have not tried to print it out yet, i am only looking at the preview.

Because i only have to provide Pdf of my work.

...for PDF files, do file > save as, selecting PDF from the drop down menu...

...if printing out, you need to ensure the orientation is correct, your document is landscape, so in the general > media options you need to select the appropriate icons, the buttons look like little men figures, there are four of them...

I am selecting Second men fig and Do Not Scale option, but this doesn not fit my page things go out of the margins

If i select Second men fig and Fit To Page option everything fits correctly.

I dont know if its correct or not.

Do i have to provide work with print settings or the Print shop will correct it themselves.

I am confused ,dont know what to do.as i said before its my first job project and ofcourse i dont want go give bad impression. My work looks fine on the screen its only the print problem.

...if it doesn't fit the previewed page then the media size isn't correct, the media size refers to the actual physical print sheet size...

...the placement also needs to be set to the middle, by way of the dotted proxy diagram in the "general" options...

...the print provider will do what they need to do if your supplying the source files as opposed to high res PDF...

Thanks for taking time for my questions.

Artboard size is A5 with 3mm bleed.

Media size: A5

Placement:Middle

if i select Fit to page option preview is perfect
but
if i select Do not scale things goes out of margin.

Do i have to care for the printing problems or i will provide as i see my work on the screen.

Your Help is really appriciated.

...the "out of margins" you refer to would be the bleeds, 3mm around all edges...

...as soon as you select "fit to page" the print scale would decrease, because you are trying to fit bleeds of an A5 on an A5...

...like trying to fit crop marks for an A5 on an A5 sheet, wouldn't make it A5, but smaller...

...you should only worry about the print settings if you want to print out yourself to your own desktop printer...

...the only other way of proofing is to save to PDF and preview in acrobat and print from acrobat...

...and in any case, your desktop printer will probably have a larger print sheet size (A4 most likely), so you really need to select A4 as the media size, that way you fit the bleeds and crop marks if you wanted them on the A4 sheet...

andrew

So it means my work is to design and provide as what i can see on my screen the client will set the printing properties according to his needs.

I dont have to worry about the printing problems.

...print tiling is to fit very large artwork across many small printed pages, bit like how billboard adverts work, smaller pages, joined together to make a much larger poster...

...when sending your artwork to a print provider, you have to either supply the source files (images, fonts, Ai files etc, etc) or a pdf...

...best talk to your print provider about what PDF settings to use in the "file > save as" dialog...

...the PDF preset PDFx-1a is usually a good starting point if in doubt...

andrew

...preset "PDFx-1a:2001" is the full name, save to your hard disk and open in acrobat to have a look...
