Hi,

I'm new to data warehousing, but have been doing SQL Server 7 admin for a while, along with some VB6, ASP/VBScript, and misc...

My department's just been tasked with exploring the possibilities of data warehousing, and I was wondering if anyone has any "lists of questions/concerns", software/dbms comparisons, project outlines/plans or anything helpful that they could pass along.

Anything you could provide would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Al

I found Ralph Kimball’s book "The Data Warehouse Toolkit" to be very useful when I started out.

Also, there are many articals written by industry experts at Go to the archives and search (Crtl+F) for Data Warehouse.

Hope this is useful.

Kimball's book "The DW-ing Toolkit" has a section entitled "The Nine Decision Points of Data Warehousing"...That contains the most fundamental list of questions needing answers before anybody proposes a design, a toolset, or writes one bit of code..There's also some good tips to help you plan for DW size requirements...

Good Luck!

I'll add my 2 cents and also recommend Kimball's book "The Datawarehouse Lifecycle Toolkit". It is broader in scope than the older book and goes into various details in addition to actually moving data into a warehouse.

HI,

DW is a large subject which cannot be explored in a small amount of time and Ralph Kimball's book just gives you an idea about the design and implementation of DW.

Lot of things are involved in implementation and each of the areas are oceans in itself..

The foremost thing you need to know is for which business group are you planning to implement a dw then what is the kind of data you have to support?IS the data a clean one and what are the transformarions involved to get the right data for analysis??

Importantly the user requirements and what kind of analysis they want to do and then choosing the right kind of analysis tools etc...

All these issues needs to be explored to start off with and one cannot just start off with out any direction and usually a dw implementation involves lot of resources.

All the above things need to be explored first to havea dw strategy.
