New to Avaya VOIP hello, few questions

Hi, I'm just getting started on a S8720 going from a Definity G3r. I have a few questions regarding the S8xx platform, thank you.

1. Can you fully administer the switch using Communication Manager only instead of GEDI?

2. How many lines in a vector can you have on the S8720?

3. Does the S8720 have digital line cards?

4. In a nutshell besides added feature and server size what would be the major difference between a Definity G3r vs a S8xxx system?

1. are you comparing SAT emulation, with GEDI? You can use either one, they are the same. Old timers like SAT, I like GEDI because I can sort things easily, and its just easier.

2. depends on what version of CM you have. CM 3 or lower had 32 steps per vector. CM4 now has 96 steps per vector.

3. Yes, TN2224CP are 24 port digital line cards., There are also TN2214B's, and many other TN #'s.

4. In a nutshell? S87XX is going to be supported going forward, G3R is at End Of Life, and will have limited or no support eventually. There are numerous other differences, you should checkout support.avaya.com

If you are refering to Terminal (Mode) vs GEDI then yes. They are both functional. In fact there are some maintenance commands like list trace which cannot be run in GEDI. The benifit to using GEDI (IMO) is the ability to list x and see the entire list whithout having to page thru.

2. How many lines in a vector can you have on the S8720?

Vectors are 32 lines. The software doesn't change in that respect just because you're on an S8720.

3. Does the S8720 have digital line cards?

Yes

4. In a nutshell besides added feature and server size what would be the major difference between a Definity G3r vs a S8xxx system?

The difference between them is simply the way in which remote port networks are deployed. With an S87xx setup you're cabinets are controlled viw IP connection accross LAN?WAN instead of the old DS1C/Switch Node setup in the G3R.

The S8700 also moves the processor out of the carrier to a pair of external servers. The software (CM) however is functionaly the same.

If you are changing from a G3r mcc cab setup, you may also be installing G650 gateways, these have a total of 14 slots, you can use normal TN boards in these gateways.

I was where you are about 1 year ago. The main thing to remember is the processors are now the servers. Other than that the same cards will work that were in your G3R other than a few control type packs. Instead of GEDI go ahead and start your emulation in ASA. That will let you move, change and add things just like before.

You also need to use web management to now get into your servers (your new processors) to make your backup's and look for server problems.

Hell, there are no rules here - we're trying to accomplish something.
