new to apache and need a simple ssl site

ok...im sorta new to apache so please bare with me
i have the latest apache 2.2 installed with mod_ssl and openssl (latest vs) on a w2k sp4 stand alone machine.
I have the the latest php installed too.
I have the site working as long as i apend :443 at the end. I followed the steps

to the t and no good...i have created a test cert ok...
im at a lost and not sure whatelse to do
i am not familar with the vitural host when config the httpd config file so that may be where my issue it
this is a single site so i dont need to get fancy
can anyone paste an example of a httpd config file so i cna see what im missing
