New SMS Install

I am being requested by my suporvisor to install SMS on our server. I have never installed SMS or have done the configuration of the software. I am in a nutshell "Flying Blind." Any tid bits of information about pre-installation, problems to watch for or any other warning signs to look for will br greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
