I mentioned in a prior post about an upcoming series of reviews about Cisco lab simulators. The series will start on the 13th at Tech Republic on their Infrastructure track. I will get the link up here shortly. Also, I referred to a new Cisco product both in a post and in my reviews based on the Boson product. Due to the NDA I had to sign, I could not say alot but now it's official.

Its very well done, one of the best tutorials Cisco has put out. There is also a 50% discount on moving up to the CCNP simulator when you are ready for it.

i'm thinking of buying that, like right now.... would it be enough to get me through a CCNP or CSSP though? Right now i'm using the Todd Lammle Sybex book on its own, which is great for the theory.

The Cisco version is CCNA only.. the full package of Netsim from Boson would be fine for the CCNP and alot of the CCIE . More so in the coming months as they flesh out the support for the 3550 switch they just started to support. I was working a BGP problem yesterday and the sim behaved exactly as my real routers did. :)

As of this moment i'm studying up on the OSI model, i've looked at it before and its so dry, still i do see that its important to understand. Does it really come up much once you move on from the CCNA?

UKHicks OSI comes up every single day in networking. I wouldn't think of even trying to troubleshoot a problem if I could not figure out what layer I'm having my issues. But with the work I do it is most the the lower 4 layers (thankfully).

KNow it... it is much harder to troubleshoot if you do not understand exactly what is *supposed* to be happening in which layer.

Here is the link to the official start of the reviews of the simulator software.

Techrepublic has a couple of "pay to view" areas. THis is one of them.On the other hand, they do offer a freebie 30 days

Short answer? Get Boson's Netsim.. either the CCNA lab or the CCNP.

I bought a copy of Semsim's router simulater just to get me through the CCNA, then i will obviously have to upgrade my software for the CCNP/CCSP
