New Server

Finally can get a new server. Must purchase through Dell or HP and use our Fedex awards and limited budget (4500).

Macola specs say Raid 1 for OS and Raid 5 for Database. Could I get away with Raid 1 (that is what we have used for 10 years with Netware/Btrieve)and build a box to later add Raid 5 and additional hard drives.

Raid 1 sounds faster to me. Our database has never grew past 8gb and we run office off the PC's.

What are the main features of a server I MUST have in order to run Progression Btrieve version and the MS SQL version

First have you ever purged any of your files? One of the characteristics of a btrieve/pervasive file is that it retains it size, even after you purge from it. This file remains that size until you rebuild it.

So to know your true database size, you need to rebuild the files first.

What about workstations? Any ude or desire to use Windows 7? This will determine what version(s) of Progression you can use. After that we can talk more about hardware.

I am trying to build a server to use now and with in mind to upgrade sometime to the MS SQL... We still use Windows XP and will continue to use it for now. So the lastest Btrieve version that uses XP is what we will upgrade to.

Yes, I have purged and rebuilt. We were sold in FEb09 and I just started over with a new database, so we are small now. We had gotten to 8GB.

Exact just announced last Thursday that version 7.7.700, which will be released in November, will be a Microsfy SQL only release. So in my opinion the time to upgrade is to MS SQL is NOW.

Upgrading to ANY newer version of Pervasive is just adding on to your cost of ownership, assuming you plan to continue using Macola.

If you do not already own MS SQL then you should buy 2008. This also supports 64 bit servers and workstations, and Windows 7.

For the benefit of those who have been around long enough, the Pervasive to SQL update is not nearly as painful as the update from DOS to Windows, but every upgrade environment needs to be evaluated for possible complications.
