New Server to replace Server 2003 1

I have a Server 2003 system that I am replacing with Server Ent. 2008 R2. I have always managed but never configured servers. I just want to make sure I set this up correctly.
Can I name the domain the same as the 2003 system and have it on the network? Or is it common practice to change the IP configuration during setup of the new server?

I guess the answer would be NO, I don't plan on joining the domain like the PC's are joined. I plan on replacing the domain server with the new server and having the domain name on the new server the same name as the old server.

If you have a 2003 Domain in place and you want to add the 2008 R2 server, you should join the server to the domain, promote it to a domain controller (which I believe will require you to extend the schema), wait a few hours for replication to complete, then demote the old domain controller. This is the graceful way to do it.

If your old domain is so completely messed up that you want to start over from scratch, build the 2008 R2 server, make it a DC in a new domain with a DIFFERENT NAME, then migrate all of your PCs and other resources into the new domain. This can be done cleanly, but can be labor-intensive.

Either way, you cannot just put a new domain up on the network with the same name as the old domain and expect to swap out the servers without the rest of the computers noticing.

Thanks, I will look for the instructions on how to promote and demote the domain controllers.
Should I do this before adding any roles to the new server?

Also pay close attention to the bottom of the link provided above. Since you are removing the old 2003 DC you will want to transfer the FSMO roles.
