HI,

We have a head office with a 2003 server running as active directory masters and exchange 2003 on a second server at the same site.

We have just set up a remote site with a VPN link and a server(different IP Range). I have not installed DNS or AD on this.

We have an issue with the link being very slow, and i think its down to all the authentication and DNS requests being done at head office so putting a lot of overhead on the line.

The server at the remote site is 2003 and is a membour of the domain.

Are there any issues with me just runnind DCPROMO accross the VPN and is there anything i should be wary of.

Many Thanks

No big deal to make the server at the remote office a domain controller, how quick is the link? Might be worth considering using install from media if the link is not that great;

How to use the Install from Media feature to promote Windows Server 2003-based domain controllers

You will need to use sites and services to have client machines in the remote office authenticate against the DC at their location;

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

Cheers for the reply,

Do i need to remove the server from the domain and rum DCPROMO from a workgroup or can i run it while it's joined to the domain

you can do it when it is joined to the domain
