New Server from Old steps

Ppl,
I plan upgrade a single NW4.11 server which serves a number of PCs which only uses the server for file storage. I have another server to use - which I hope to build to NW5 and then copy the NDS tree over (if possible to get away from reentering all the accounts).

I could just build a clean new NW5 server and copy the tree and then create the users - provide them access to the old server files and remove it. If so does anyone have steps for this.

I the hard slog would be to actually build a NW5 server and migrate (somehow the NDS tree or the accounts over). Hows that done? any help? ========================================

There are some very good docs and TIDs at Novell's site for this. Basically, you install NW5 on the new server and use their migration tool to move all the NDS and the data to the new server.

It is recommended that the first NetWare v5.x Server to be installed into a NDS Tree should be the Server that holds the Master Replica!

I would upgrade your existing Server(s) to NetWare v5.x before introducing any other new NetWare v5.x Servers.

If your intent is to move to new Server hardware with the existing Servers info and data, thats different story. I would keep the Server at NW v4.11 and complete the Server hardware upgrade... THEN, I would upgrade to NetWare v5.x.

I have detailed documentation explaining the procedures for completing a NetWare v4.11 Server Hardware upgrade. Its actually very easy, just kinda time consuming.

Let me rewrite my initial query:

I have an old NW4.11 server. It has current users and files running on it's on NDS tree.

I want to build a new NW5 server on a seperate machine but copy the NDS info from the old NW4.11 machine. So that the users can easily log into it. Is this possible or do I have to reinput everyone's details etc... ========================================

You are asking for trouble if you attempt to try and move the NDS from NetWare v4.11 directly to a NetWare v5.1 Server.

Like I said above... You would be better off (...and MUCH safer!) if you created this new Server as a NetWare v4.11 server, migrate the DS info to the new Server hardware, then upgrading your new hardware toi NetWare v5.x.
