Hi, I have set up a desktop pc with server 2k for a test purpose in my house, all is good with the pc and domain but now i am looking into DHCP set up, am i right in thinking this would be the best set up,

Broadband comes into house and into supplier modem/router, i then take this into an ethernet port on back of server and then let the server handle the DHCP and internet access, i then connect another ethernet out of another port on server and connect this into a switch, this switch then feeds all the pcs and a wirelss access point and also assigns ip detials? Any tips greatly appreciated?

Thanks

If your modem/router is NATted, then a less complicated setup seems to be modem/router to switch and all other connections to same switch. Then, if your modem/router assigns DHCP, you can choose to let it serve out DHCP or disable it in the router and configure DHCP on the server. In any case, hard-coding the server's IP outside the DHCP scope is usual so it isn't a moving target.

Hmm thanks for the reply, the set up you mention is what i already have all works ok but what if i want to add a VPN so i can dial in to my network from outside, will i be able to set this up if the router is dishing out IP's, i want to be able to remote desktop into any of the PC's on the network from outside after i connect though a VPN

I would think VPN would depend on the capabilities of your router, but I will admit that is an area beyond my experience. Perhaps you would gain a wider audience for this question in another forum, perhaps forum463 ?
