New Request number after save of record 1

I need help in creating a script that will pull the next available number (request #).

I can't use auto number because this in some cases eliminates some #'s when the request is cancelled.

I have used the DMax formula but this works great for one form only (I think). I have 5 forms (diff. depts.) that are used but are on the same DB.
I have a save button on the form and maybe the new number will be used only when the save button is depressed thus eliminating duplicate #'s.

Any tip is appreciated.
