I recently got a nice new cpu fan thats really quiet.
Now I want my power supply to do the same.
I have a p4m800 7a mobo, pent d 3.3 ghz proc.
Any good recommendations for a p/s? Proly shoudl push at least 500watts and needs to be quiet.. :)

thanx in advnace

hmmm? 500watt plus silent doesn't really exist.
That much power and the components that are using it need cooling.
The next best thing to passive is a PSU with a big controlled fan using heatpipes.

Again Zalman has an excellent reputation for quality PSU's with near silent and silent operation.

I have recently installed two Antec power supplies, which were very silent.

Nexus has one:

I believe this is a Dutch company, so it should be available in UK and EU. I have only found one distributor in US, that is above. Sorry, I missed the "500 watt" req. in the OP.

I agree Zalman is synonymous with quiet but I am a true silence freak, I hear everything and am easily distracted by sound. I don't hear either of the two Nexus PSU-powered PCs within 2 meters of my ears in my home office. Of course they all have Zalman CPU coolers too...The third Nexus-powered PC <1 meter from my right ear has minimal noise, but it also has (5) fans. I think it's the HSF & GFX, not the PSU...or maybe even the RAID 1 array.

Regardless you cannot go wrong with Nexus. They are harder to find but they have passed my personal tests to called be the quietest. Brands I have tried (and pressed into service at the office after failing at home):

PC Power & Cooling "Silencer"...great PSU but nowhere near silent;
Antec TruePower 550 EPS12V...normal PSU sound
Zalman 460...way better but still "Whooshy"
Coolmax fanless...super quiet but heatflow has to be right

Take it from a silence freak that has lived with Nexus PSus for the last 3-4 years, they are the quietest I have tested.

Well the quietest was a 1999 HP Brio, when I dissected it I found a fanless 90W PSU...[smile]

wahnula U quoting me again? lol
Nexus, very nice! but it looks like it uses a fan to me, so NOT silent!

And franklin97355's Phantom! hmmmm same here!

completely silently until its internal temperature reaches a user selected temperature, whereupon the fan turns on.

And even that case at $800 plus... only has a limited 350watt heat disipation capacity.

Quiet but not SILENT! me thinks.
