New printers on older computers

I have a question for someone to answer. We have an office out in Texas and they were having problems printing from a Pentium II/200Mhz computer. They had bought a HP 5650 printer to go on this computer and it would not print.

I talked to them over the phone and we tried different BIOS settings and a different cable. Finally I told them that they should take it in to a local computer shop and have them try a new Parallel card. When they took it in, the tech instead put an older printer (do not know what type) and it printed. The tech told them that the newer printers would not work with the older 200-233Mhz computers.

Has anyone ever heard of this? If so, do you know of any reference on the Internet that I can read.

Thanks for any help given.

Could be that the computer does not support a "IEEE 1284" parallel connection.
