Hello,
Lately I've been getting ads that popup when I'm using IE that look like the've come to my computer without me clicking on any type of ad or going to a site that has ads on it.
This is one that I received a few days ago...
If the link doesn't work, try copy and paste
Would there be a setting in IE that prevents these, or should I get a firewall. I guess I should probably have one anyway since I'm using DSL, but zonealarm never really has worked for me....

Any tips on how to get rid of these?
Thanks a lot,
Spencer

Howdy:

Welcome to the world of internet spam.. NOT email spam but "Internet Spam".. There is a company out there that specializes in this sort of advertising. Somehow (he won't say how his products works), he can send ads through the net and have them popup haphazardly anywhere. Suffice to say many companies have bought into his operation as there is no law against this right now nor is there any way to stop it.

So is there anyway of stopping this? Firewall maybe?
Its getting pretty annoying that people are using some pretty low techniques to try and "advertise" things.

There was a write-up about this program and the creator somewhere online.. I will try to find it again..

As far as stopping it.. NO, so far nothing seems to work which is why he is getting a pile of sales requests for his product from all over..

Someone told me how this was working. You can do it yourself to...

Go into notepad and type:
Net send [computer name] [message]
replace the brackets and computer name with your computer name and replace the brackets and message with a message.

Save it as test.cmd on your computer somewhere and when you double click to run it, the same message boxes will come up.

This shows what it looks like

The guy must have found out a way to send a huge amount of these net sends with a program he wrote or something...

Thanks for your help,

Spencer

Yep.. that's it..

The guy is making a fortune on the mis-fortune of others..

You can stop this by disabling the Windows Messenger service on your system. The advistiser uses a function of the OS (not MSN Messenger or other such type programs).

If you don't need the Messenger service then disable this. If you do need it then get a firewall to prevent Messenger being access by external sites. joegz

Joegz:

hate to burst your bubble, but I use XP with Messenger disabled totally and use a firewall.. Would you like to see what the latest "Web popup" said??

That doesn't work sorry to say !!

Murray

Joe:

I wish it would have worked.. I have been nailed by just the one so far but I am afraid the worst is yet to come..

I saw the "messenger fix" before so I tried it.. No go !!

Murray

More and more do I appreciate my router. Good luck to you.
