New Nvidia drivers slowdown?

Hello all,

I'm not sure about anyone else but has anyone seen their graphics performance slow down noticably with the newest Nvidia drivers (version 66.93)? I'm running a GeForce FX 5200 AGP card. Haven't installed any new software or changed my computer in any way besides updating the drivers (uninstalled previous and installed new).

Puzzled,

Current drivers are optimised for GF6 (6800) range of cards and not older ranges, as is often the case newer drivers actually slow down performance or can even introduce problems that weren't there.
If you go and look at the release note's and what the driver fixes nearly all references are towards the newest ranges.
The best Nvidia driver in terms of performance, is generally 3rd to 5th release after a card is introduced or just before the next range arrives.
But Dito* with this driver I have been getting all sorts of lock ups etc on my FX5950ultra, I had to revert to an earlier one to get back stability.
Not sure now I've fitted a 6800GT wether to try again.

Yeah I thought so. I'm moving back to the previous version, that seemed to work well. Thanks for the confirm guys.

On that note, do you guys know of any good freeware/shareware that will measure FPS performance and where I can download it? I'd like to do a lil' testing of my own.

Thanks a bunch!

Mad onions 3D benchmark 2001 for an FX5200, if you can still get it for Free? 2003 version would be too intensive for this card. Martin

Be realistic! [ponder] this is an FX5200 we are talking about.
Thats why I mentioned earlier benchmarks.

Hola,

@paparazi - you're right, sorry... but earlier versions are to be found aswell on that website... Mark03 or 04...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

I have 2 PCs - one has a GeForce2 MX400 (32MB), and the other has a GeForceFX 5600 (128MB)....none of them experience slowdown with newer drivers... I mean I'd expect the new drivers to be fine with the 5600, but the MX400 is still going strong with newer drivers!

btw: I'm with DragonQ0105 on that one, I am using Forceware v70.90 and a FX5600XT no slow downs what so ever...

Realize, as the link I gave above shows, there is strong evidence towards a slowdown (they are testing a 6800GT) albeit minor, going from say 60fps to 56fps, which is unnoticable to anyone unless you have a meter sitting listing the fps.
