Ok, the title sums it up nicely. Our sole server at work, an old NT server, bit the bullet this morning(HDD crash). We used our copy of NT, and installed it onto a new machine. We set up user accounts, etc, and 98 machines can join the new domain without problems. The problem is XP. It says domain can't be found/validated, but we can still log on to XP PCs using our old login name/pass. I tried making the XP PC leave the domain and join a workgroup, then back to being on the domain, but that does not work either. I'd appreciate some help here.

HI.

> The problem is XP. It says domain can't be found/validated
This is because you have created a new domain (new SID).
It is not the same as the original domain.

> we can still log on to XP PCs using our old login name/pass
This is because XP caches (remembers) the last 10 logins.
Try logging in with a different user name and it would probably fail.

That method should work.
What exactly did you do.
When did it fail? What error message?
What is in the Event Viewer (both server and workstation)?

A better solution is to restore a backup of the system on the server if you had one.

Bye

I had an idea last night that I may try. I managed to get the old SID from a file off the old server. Do you think that if I change the SID on the new NT server that the XP machines will join without complaint?

You will need a third party software to change the SID. It is not a easy thing to do.
