I may be facing the need for a new mother board with cpu, case possibly, as my current configureation is having interface problems.

I called the SF computers, where I am told that if I simply take out the drives and put them on a new board, I need to reinstall Windows.

I know that W2K is sensitive to configuration, but I have the vage memory of having done this before. Does anyone know? Playing with the parts would take half a day at best, but reinstalling is a week long process for this one. Thanks.

YOu can in theory do this. It has worked for me about 50/50. the last time I did the machine was blue screening even after I reloaded windows 2000. but on the other hand I have moved disks form one machine to another and reloaded win 2000 and the device drivers and it worked just fine.

What do you mean, "reloaded" win 2000? Reiinstalled?

You'll probably need a repair reinstall -
best done with an install disk at same service pack level (presumably SP4) as your installation. You can create one if you haven't got one - eg,
You'll need to reapply wndows updates (unless you include those in the slipstram too).

But drive might just work in the new setup.

Thanks a lot. That's a great site. I have been looking for a place to find the service packs without the Microsoft installation application for a while.

This makes things look a little rosier. So let me summarize:
It may be possible just to switch the drives into a new MB/CPU setup. If not, it should be possible to fix the BSD problem with a repair reinstall of windows with sp4 slipstreamed, right?

correct - I've done this many times (have only had one failure - which had a hidden history I only became aware of bit by bit - it was an upgrade from win98, had been hit by lightning!, plus a catalogue of other issues. The repair just would not complete - luckily I'd backed up the installation, so could restore customer's PC to its former unhappy state - ended up building him a new machine! Getting off topic now, so I'll shut up).
