Has anyone heard of this? One Macola user recently reported to me that a new law is in effect, or is about to take effect, that prohibits printing the SSN on check stubs. I have asked about details but so far my they cannot give me much to go on.

Has anyone heard of this? If so ay details about what law or act this was a part of would be helpful.

Can my employer use my SSN as an employee identification number?

Yes. However, the Social Security Administration discourages employers from displaying Social Security numbers on documents that are viewed by other people such as badges, parking permits, or on lists distributed to employees. Employers do, however, need each employees' Social Security number to report earnings and payroll taxes.

California also has a law that prohibits employers from publicly posting or displaying an employee's Social Security number (SSN), though this law does not apply to SSNs printed on pay stubs. The California Office of Privacy Protection has a comprehensive guide that outlines this law in more detail at

I have a client who has requested designable PR checks for just this reason. Up through 7.6.300, Macola has still not made this option available. I don't know if it is a law, but more companies are getting sensitive about the SSN issue.

With Reform, you can print the PR checks and not include the SSN. Reform is a great package fr those of you who have not checked it out.
