New Laptop and Apple Cinema Monitor

I can not get the Apple Cinema monitor to work with my new HP laptop for the life of me. Worked just fine with my desktop. I have bought a DVI to VGA converter and the NVIDIA control panel recongizes it but when I enable it nothing happens. any suggestions?

See if the laptop has an option for switching its video signal from its screen to an external monitor.

yeah it does and it shows up in the nvidia console. but when I click to extend or make primary nothing happens.

Was the monitor connected with the DVI-to-VGA adapter to a VGA port on the desktop?
