Sorry if this is not the right forum for this post!

I am basically wondering what the difference between running something like IIS on our server for our companies users to access our website and an intranet?

If there are differences could someone point me in the right direction for setting up an intranet.

Thanks

An intranet is basically a website that is only accessible to members of an organisation. The easiest way of doing this is set up a web server on one of your company pcs but you could do an intranet on a paid server as well. The key is who has access to it AFAIK

Thanks for that, I though I was just reading too much into the situation.

Basically what i am doing is setting up a Site that students that visit our office can see, but is not accessable outside of the office.

I'll just set up MS IIS on one of our servers and make the firewall not allow connections outside of our IP Range.

I would prefer the students to access the site by typing something like Would I need to change the Hosts file on each machine?

What you can do is just set up a pc to host the intranet site, and name the machine something like "Intranet". Then, once it's on your network, you can access it by opening up a browser (from a computer inside your network) and typing in " (or whatever you named the machine) and it will open up the default page of the web site. Now it's only accessable from computers inside your network that can resolve " to a local IP Address. The outside world can't get to it. There's no need to fool with domain names/extensions or modifying servers or making changes to a firewall.

Hope This Helps!

Dump MS/IIS and get LInux and install apache as your webserver. less headaches. Visi the apache forum here at Tek-tips for more information.

You can either install a DNS server internally assign the machine a UNC name that is descriptive (like, as said, "intranet").

No reason to dump Windows/IIS at all unlike what the Linux accolytes will have you believe.
Unless you're already well versed in Unix administration the headaches will be a lot worse.

If you want Apache you can get a Windows version also...
