I need to install Java on this machine. According to the Java site (Oracle now), Java requires IE in order to install Java. So, I installed IE8.

However, I am unable to connect to the internet with IE8 and therefore still cannot install Java. I get the following error page:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

More information

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

•Internet connectivity has been lost.
•The website is temporarily unavailable.
•The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
•The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.
•There might be a typing error in the address.
•If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options, click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled under the security section.

For offline users

You can still view subscribed feeds and some recently viewed webpages.
To view subscribed feeds

1.Click the Favorites Center button , click Feeds, and then click the feed you want to view.

To view recently visited webpages (might not work on all pages)

1.Click Tools , and then click Work Offline.
2.Click the Favorites Center button , click History, and then click the page you want to view.

I clicked the diagnose connections problems and got the following information:

Last diagnostic run time: 08/06/11 12:25:45 HTTP, HTTPS, FTP Diagnostic
HTTP, HTTPS, FTP connectivity

info HTTP: Successfully connected to info FTP (Passive): Successfully connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
info HTTPS: Successfully connected to

I have been searching for a solution for hours and have not found anything anywhere.

My basic need is to install Java, so either of the two solutions will work for me.

1) Can I install Java without having IE onboard? If so, how?
2) How do I get IE8 to access webpages?

I really don't care about IE8 as I don't use junk unless I have no other choice.

Poor people do not hire employees. If you soak the rich, who are you going to work for?

In IE, check under Tools, Internet Options, LAN Settings - you may need to specify a proxy server (if you're behind a firewall). You might be able to find the settings in the other browser on the problem PC, or in the PC you're using to connect to this forum.

Not behind a firewall.

This is the problem PC. Am using FF here.

Where do I look to find the settings in FF, and how do I use them once I find them?

In my Firefox 4.0.1, it's Tools, Options, Network, Connection settings. Open that window, then in IE, Tools, Internet Options, connections, LAN Settings - using the settings from FF in IE.

According to the Java site (Oracle now), Java requires IE in order to install Java.
I'm not sure where you got that information from but according to Java's system requirements you only require one of the listed browser's installed in order to install Java.

You only require IE 8 if you are running a 64-bit browser, which, btw, is only IE. Therefore, if you're running FF you don't need to install IE 8 64-bit in order to install Java.

Hope this helps.

SUCCESS - FINALLY!!!

I finally managed to get Java working here. IE would not load it. FF would not load it. Nothing worked.

After much digging I found a link to the offline installation package ( then downloaded and installed Java.

For some reason the online installation version would not work in either browser.
