New install problems

I've done a brand new install on a new hard drive, new PC. But it's not very well. I've done plenty of fresh 2k installs and never had any problems.

First problems are that I can't copy or paste anything. It lets me copy but the paste option is greyed out when I go to do so. I also keep getting a SVChost.exe error and the RPC service keeps stopping.

I've ran an up to date virus checker over it and nothing found.

Any advice much apreciated.

I had same problem and after searching the net i found that all symptoms pointed to the blaster worm virus. I downloaded all fixes including the rpc exploit fix for win2k. All virus fixes reported that the virus was not found on my system, so I continued anyway and ran the rpc update and installer update. I can now copy and paste and svchost error is gone but still having problems installing new software. My tray icons dont show up and some programs do not run. Also, some web services like acrobat handle for ie doesnt work anymore. You can find the instructions on removing this virus at

Maybe it will work for you. But I still need help regarding instalaltion of new software and getting my tray icons back. If someone can please shed some light on this...

Your symptoms are pretty vague and don't seem related. Specifically what apps are you finding unable to paste into? Are you running service pack 4 and all the critical updates? Have you tried using the repair option on the CD?

Symptoms I had relating directly to the blaster worm:

* svchost.exe error directly after connecting to the network
* rpc error when installing new software
* cannot copy and paste anything
* cannot ctrl-n to open new window in ie
* cannot ctrl-f to find in ie

All fixed except for some issues with installing new software and certain apps that are supposed to run on start-up. Some apps run but tray icons dont show.

SP3 at the moment (found at work that SP4 made the PC's go dog slow) with updates. It can't copy of paste in windows explorer for a start.
