Im new at this Solaris stuff and am installing a new server from scratch. Can anyone recommend an appropriate file layout for the OS drive? The auto configure allocates about 100 meg to root, and 30 - 60 meg to some of the other slices. What is appropriate when I have a 34gig drive? I expect to allocate a lot more to the various default directories but I dont want to go overboard just throwing disk space at them for no need.

thanks for any suggesitons

Here's how my layout is for the OS-type filesystems.

Of course, it depends on what you are going to use the system for, too. This is for a development system running Solaris 7. I also have a similar layout for a Solaris 9 box, but I think the swap is in /var/run rather than /tmp.

In my opinion, most autoconfigure layouts (no matter what flavor) allocate too little to /. These sizes were suggested to me by someone who works for Sun who was helping me do my first install:

/ 493688
/usr 1445320
/var 493688
/usr/local 264908
/export/home 1018382 (mainly because of some log files I keep in a directory there)
/opt 2055705
/tmp 3789624 (swap)

If I had to do it over again, I would have put more into / and /usr and less into /opt. This system has been running for a couple of years as a development box, and the / filesystem is 70% full, /usr is 62% full, and /opt is only 23% full.

The Solaris 9 box has similar sizes to my "if I had to do it over again" wish.

Hope this helps.

Personally I wouldn't bother separating /, /usr and /usr/local into separate filesystems and fragmenting your free disk space. Put them all on a 3GB filesystem and you should be fine. Annihilannic.

great, thank, that was exactly what I needed to get started... the server is going to be dedicated to running one application and I just needed a good basic os layout...

thanks again....
