Can I get some HP PCL output help/advice please

I have a well established stable FPD26 app which uses HP PCL codes. In the past it has worked with HPIIIP, HP4, HP5 printers. Now along comes USB connection and I have got some grief... The latest printers say that they are PCL5e and PCL6 which (I would assume be backwards compatible... I know I know never assume anything))

Anyway.. I used a HP1015 shared on the network via a print server with a USB connection... works fine.

Change printer to a brand new HP1020 NO GO

Try running the HP1020 off the DOT4 USB connection... forget it.

Tried using a HP3390 Laser Printer Multifunction... no formatting

I have done all the proper things... ie

Shared the Printer
net use lpt1 \\computername\printersharename Persistent:Yes
etc etc

Either it loses all the codes OR doesnt work.

Easiest solution is to re-write everything in VFP ... but for now... am i doing something wrong ? Is there a work around solution ?

Oh and of course, the HP1020 and the HP3390 print perfect Windows Test pages.

Based on Google 'finds' there seems to be generally a lot of issues using this printer.

For many it installs OK and works fine, but for a number of others:
* the installation process messes up the workstation's USB ports
* some people need to quit talking to it via ASCII, but instead send it PDF files
* some refer to it as a PostScript printer and others not
* some people say that sending a CHR(3) will kill the printout
* and a number of other issues.

The HP Specs on this printer
call its Printer Language "Host-based printing" - not PCL5e or PCL6

I'd recommend you contact HP Support (although they won't be much help) and have them fo what they can to clarify the issues.

Then I'd suggest that you attempt to communicate with the printer line-by-line via your FP Command Window - confirm the individual PCL codes that you are currently using.

If that works, then you can fix your code.

Good Luck,

Fantastic post... thankyou.. You are right JRB...

I spent some time looking at PCL5e and found what you advised... These are NOT PCL enabled

I returned the HP1020 and exchanged for a HP1022 which IS PCL enabled...

Used the NET USE command and BINGO it works...

So the dilemma persists with the HP3390 but for now I am happy with a cheap printer which will do for now. (I still think HP has an issue with the HP3390)

THANKS AGAIN
