Hi.
Info, before I start:
Motherboard: ABIT - AN8-V
CPU: AMD ATHLON 64 3000+
RAM: CORSAIR VALUE SELECT 1024MB KIT (2X512MB) PC3200 CAS2.5
Video Card: Leadtek Winfast PX6600TD Nvidia Geforce 6600 256MB
Case: StarCase ATX-LN8009-C4 Black Midi tower case, Long body
PSU: Unicase 400W
New Heatsink: Zalman CNPS7000B-AlCu
Old Heatsink was the stock one from the CPU.
So, yeah, I bought a new heatsink/fan for my CPU, and it arrived yesterday.
I turned my computer off and left it for half an hour or so, then proceeded to remove the old heatsink, remove the thermal paste off the CPU, apply the new stuff, put the new heatsink on. All seemed to be fine.
I go to turn it on, and it won't boot. The LED display on my mobo says "26". So, I go look this up in the manual. POST code 26 means the following:
"1. If Early_Init_Onboard_Generator is not defined Onboard clock generator initialization. Disable respective clock resource to empty PCI & DIMM slots.
2. Init onboard PWM
3. Init onboard H/W monitor devices"
That all pretty much meant nothing to me. So I went ahead and removed everything non-essential from the motherboard, and tried again. Same thing.
I then, without actually removing the fan/heatsink, unplugged the fan from the motherboard and plugged by old one in, while just holding it, to see if it was a problem with the new fan. Turn it on, same thing happens. I then put my heatsink back in, and I still get the same thing.
So, yeah, I have no idea. I figure I've broken something in the install process, but I didn't touch anything except for the CPU, so I dunno what it could be.
Oh, and my new heatsink is seated correctly, I checked multiple times. And I applied the thermal paste correctly and all. And I've left the computer overnight to see if it would fix itself... no difference.
I also tried different combinations of my RAM, but I still get the same error. I've cleared the CMOS multiple times, too. No difference.
So, yeah, any help on how to fix this problem would be very appreciated. I'm kinda pissed off. All I wanted was a new heatsink/fan. Anyway, thanks.
Afternotes: I posted that on a few other forums. After a bit of searching, and help from some people, I've decided that I've either damaged by CPU or motherboard during the install process of the heatsink, or that there is a problem with my PSU.
I say the part about the PSU becuase according to some people on other forums, it's +12V rating of 16A is too low for my motherboard/chipset. It may/may not be the problem, becuase I've had it running for 4/5 months without a problem. But it's possible this has made it have a problem.
I'm going to take it into a computer store on monday, so they can find out what's truly wrong. Any suggestions on what to try/what could be wrong would be very appreciated until then however.
Thanks.
